Garama / Klias Wetland's River Safari

Located about 120km from Kota Kinabalu at the Klias peninsular is the Klias Wetland, a Mangrove Forest Reserve rich with river side wildlife and birds. Among the wildlife that could be sited at the Klias River are the proboscis monkeys, long tail macaque and silver languor monkey as well as a variety of birds.

A trip to Klias Wetland is usually a day trip which normally starts in the afternoon at 3pm and departs from the Kota Klias Jetty. Light refreshments are served before tour starts and local Kampung style dinner will be served upon arrival back to the jetty. It is highly recommended to engage a tour operator for this tour and please make sure tour companies provide you with an experience wildlife tour guide where a detailed description of the nature and wildlife will make your tour much more interesting.

This route is also popular for visitors who do not have enough time to go to the east coast such as Sukau as it is much nearer and does not require to take a flight from Kota Kinabalu city to Sandakan town. Klias is accessible by self drive or land tour. However, the proboscis monkeys in Klias are still "wild" as they are not so used to visitors in Sukau. Klias Wetlands should not be treated as an alternative to the east coast wild life destinations as Klias has its own unique features which should be explored!

Visiting Klias Wetlands is a must if you plan to visit Pulau Tiga, the "Survivor Series" island or if you plan to drive to Labuan and catch a ferry from Menumbok town. Other areas that you should visit along with this destination is the town of Beaufort which is rich with local tropical fruits and the Padas River White Water Rafting Adventure. Local tropical fruits can be found at the Beaufort market which is near the Train Station.

Travel south to the Klias wetland for a river cruise in search of the elusive Proboscis monkey, rare Silver Leaf monkey, mischievous macaques and myriad species of birds that inhabit this unique riverine environment. As dusk falls, look out for crocodiles lurking by the riverbanks.

On a moonless night, be mesmerized by the flickering lights of fireflies against the night sky. Enjoy a village-style dinner and immerse yourself in the sounds of nature in this rustic setting. The boat ride to watch wildlife is about 1 - 2 hours. During the ride, there are no toilet facilities and if it rains along the way, you may get wet. Although there is a high possibility of wildlife sightings due to their habit of resting or mating by the riverbanks in the evening, wildlife sightings are not guarantee.
